Executive Management Aptitude(eMAT) Test

Guys,

For those who are looking at evaluating options to join for eMEP and/or ePGP program of IIM Kozhikode enclosed is one sample question paper. A snippet of eMAT is there at IIMK website but this one is a complete model paper. This would help you in preparing for the same. I tried locating the same in and around the web but couldn’t.

      1. Hi Vinay,

Request your views about the relevance of EPGP from IIM-K in terms of switching to an academic career. In other words,is the brand value of IIM-K and the EPGP course significant when applying for a phd in american universities? Please let me know if the ALUMNI of these courses have ventured into this area.

        Thanks in advance

        Regards
        Ushant

      2. AMBA accredition would definitely help you to apply to any PHD programs in UK/Europe. During our in-campus program a point was brought in to know if a person who is interested un doing FPM(Fellow Program in Management) from IIMK. Prof C Raju (Chairman EPGP) did say that they are evaluating a possibility that a person who has done EPGP can apply for Phd as well.

Regarding US I am not sure as in US there is a different accredition body which takes care of evaluating the effectiveness of program but there is a definite possibility that one can convince US University to skip the coursework. Also with IIMK centers opening in 5 major cities in India this program would surely get a boost. As far as Indian govt is concerned they do not consider EPGP same as MBA be it from ISB and/or EPGP from other IIMs

      3. Hi Vinay,

Your blog and sample test really helps in understanding how the course is structured and what to expect in eMAT. As you said that you have another sample paper. It would really help if you could upload that too as the test date is a month away from now.

        Thanks
        Gaurav

  1. Thanks vinay,

Are you aware of the approx date for the eMAT entrance for admissions in 2011? The format seems to indicate that it requires preparations on the lines of CAT. Please let me know if this is correct and how much time i have to make an attempt for 2011.

    Thanks & Regards

    1. Ushant,
The advertisement would come out in June-July period in all newspapers. I have uploaded one eMAT question paper. I would also scan and upload another one which I have for people’s benefit. I gues 1-2 months preparation is good enough. One needs to know the kind of questions/format and then one can be prepared mentally. Also one should have minimum 50% marks in 10/12th/College and experience > 5 years. We have people who have 7 years to 35 years experience and average experience is 10 years.
Let me know if I am of any help to you
      Regards
      Vinay

  2. Hi Vinay,

Your first stint with IIMK exam was very encouraging for me, atleast, after looking at sample paper…however can you recommend any books so that i can go through same and crack the exam…..
Also will IIMK diploma step give boost to career bcuz of value or enhancement of knowledge?

    1. Wonderful!!! I am sorry to say that I am not aware of any books to crack the exam. However for everyone’s benefit I would scan EMAT exam paper which I had given and upload the same… What is important is to attempt questions which you know of first and attempt it correctly. It is more of time management and using ones own judgement. .. Again there is no rocket science. One has to attempt with cool and logical mind… Have a confidence in you….

      2. Kiran,

Some of the questions asked are –

        a) Why do you want to pursue this program?
        b) Why didn’t you evaluate at full time program?
        c) Are you aware of the rigor of the program and how can you say you would be able to do it?
        d) What makes you do this program at this stage in life?
        e) What if your company asks you to go onsite for business trip ? How would you be able to pursue this program them
        f) What are your interests and hobbies and what do you do in your free time?
        g) Some current affairs like like got into discussion with them regarding Micro Finance — is it good for the people or does it have a hidden move behind
        h) Family background and job description and background – education and employment

    1. Shubhi,
One may not get a direct and tangible value from the case in terms of any placement or anything. But for sure there will be good amount of learning which you would get while doing this program. It is a power packed course which is very much compressed. Every session has a lot of real life case studies taken from magazines like Harvard Business Review and others and assignment which will force you to learn things which you may not know. You may well be able to appreciate other organization functions which you otherwise take it for granted. During the course also you would think of ways how could you bring productivity in what you do, any different approach which you could follow. Also IIMK brand is also worth the consideration.
So to end it value you would get it indirectly and not directly. Also degrees, certifications help to an extent and after that what matters is how do you cope up and do in a real life situation…. I hope I am able to explain it

      Vinay

  5. Hi Vinay,

I have quit my software job (4yrs exp) to take care of my infant. So I’m planning to join epgp course in this gap as I want a role change. Is it a good option to join epgp iim-k? Will I get new role after this course? Will it help in any way? Please let me know. It will be very helpful.

    1. Veena,
Depends on what role you are planning to come back as. If you ask me with just four (4) years of experience no one will give you a manager/management role unless you have relevant experience in doing some of it. Also it would be difficult to make transition to newer job profile say finance professional and/or supply chain professional as you would be considered fresher there as well with no placement support.

I therefore would not suggest you to undergo this course just because of your number of years of experience and IT background. Since I am from IT background I can relate to folks with your set of experience. I wouldn’t have them in my team as manager with just 4 years of experience and with EPGP degree as you wouldn’t be able to to basics of Stakeholder management, do estimations, resource management and do other planning and monitoring for any projects.

I hope I answered your question in this regards

      Regards
      Vinay
