Not able to Decide if EPGP IIMK is for me?

In last Two days since the results are out I have been receiving calls and emails from well wishers and friends who have cleared EPGP asking me for guidance about this course. Some of the questions asked are given below –

But in general a word of caution here that these views are my own and what I have got to know in last 1 year studying at IIMK 🙂 🙂 🙂

A) How is the course in terms of depth? :: Entire EPGP course is divided into two years – Year 1 and Year 2. Each year is divided into 4 terms, 3 months each. Each Term has 6 and/or 7 courses. 2nd years is specialization. Each course has a certain Credits associated with it. E.g. an economics course has 2 credits while Environment Management has 1 Credit and Marketing Management has 3 credits. A 2 and 3 credits courses are taught for 18 Hrs i.e. (6 days – 3 Hrs each) in a class room session while a 1 credit course finishes off in 9 Hrs. For each of the courses evaluation mechanism consists of Attendance/Class Participation (Not mandatory)(5-10% weightage), Quizzes (20% weightage), Assignments (10-15% weightage), Projects (20% weightage) and End Terms Examination (50-60% weightage). Most of the Project and Assignment are Group assignments of 4-6 students

Now looking at this you would find that considering the number of courses and class room session hours available in hand and looking at syllabus to cover often it becomes a race against time. Course is very much compressed for EPGP students for two reasons – a) They are already having industry exposure of more than 5 years and b) There are only 9 hrs study classes in a week which is very less if you compare it with PGP student. PGP student has to be in more effort and program is of higher rigour.

B) How will it add value to my career after I complete 2 years course from IIMK? :: It depends on what kind of value are you looking at. In case one is fantasizing of higher pay packages just because he has finished his EPGP course then this is a far fetched dream. In case one is looking at jumping to newer function areas (like moving from Operations to Sales) and think that he can command same salary as he was getting in his current role then also it is not a good idea to think so. However if you are serious on doing this course and are aiming to enhance your knowledge and skills and are trying to get a better understanding of different Organizational functions. then this course is for you.

Learnings in EPGP happens mostly through various case studies of industry. Many of the cases are directly picked up from Harwards Business Review (HBR) and other journals. So going through tons of case studies and getting to know various subject would definitely give you a better insight and be more organized and focussed. In case you are looking at transitioning to newer jobs and/or higher responsibilities these learnings would definitely help you.

Career progression also depends on various skill set of an individual and is not solely dependent on EPGP program of IIMK only 🙂 If you are in s right sized organization which is growing and you have good inter personal skills and there exists an appropriate oppurtunity in your organization you surely would go to higher role/more salary.

C) How do you compare the courses with other similar courses being offered by colleges like XLRI, IIMC, IIML by Hughes / NIIT / Reliance :: Here again provider does not matter if you are doing it from Reliance / NIIT / Hughes … What it depends on is whether organizing institute and you as a student is serious enough to do the course. Among others I surely can say that this program is better managed, more organized and more professionally driven than other institutes. Professors seemed to be more serious about this program. There were also talks of IIMK establishing 5 satellite campuses in Delhi/Mumbai/KolKata/Bangalore/Chennai. Idea behind these centers are to establish more industry linkages and brand building of IIMK and get locational advantage (which is not there currently). Not sure how far are the talks with regards to actual reality but this point was surely discussed in campus. Again one another point to note is that IIMK not just got PGP program AMBA accredited they also got their EPGP also AMBA accredited which shows the seriousness of the institute. Again if you ask me, AMBA certification is more from branding purpose than anyone getting a value of it it. However it shows that program meets some basic requirements and necessary minimum creiteria of global executive MBA.

D) How is the faculty ? :: Overall faculty mix is good. Some of them are very passionate about teaching their subject like Prof Balooni of Env Management, Prof Atanu Adhikari of Marketing Management, Prof Abhilash Nair of Financial Management and Prof Subhashish Dey of Economics. There are some neutral professors too and in few cases classes are boring too primarily because of delivery not so good, subject awareness and mode of delivery (difficult to maintain focus sometimes). But then this would be same everywhere too.

E) Diploma / Certificate :: Again I would here link to what value you want to derive out of this program. There definitely exists a flexibility to convert EEPGM program to EPGP program and vice versa. One can take 1 year break in every year of the course study if situation permits (needs approval of IIMK though)

  1. Dear Mr. Bhutani,

Thank you for the info, m sure this will be instrumental in giving us an insight and deciding for ourselves.

I am also receipt of the offer letter for the 4th batch of EPGP from IIM-K starting October’11.

My name is Ankit Fogla, 26 years old and have a total of 61 months of experience in full.
I am a B.com (hons) graduate from Calcutta University & have pursued a Post-Grad diploma in Banking.
Currently I am a Sr. Manager with Bharti Airtel Ltd and is accountable for sales in there Corporate Postpaid business

However I am not sure weather to go ahead with the offer or not and hence an appeal for advise from you as my senior.
There are some of the doubts I have and I am sure some of them might be the ones you had once upon in time while joining the course.

    1. What is credibility of the course viz-a-viz a full time E-MBA offered by the IIM’s ?
    2. Is the diploma equivalent to the one we receive on undergoing a mba prog ?
    3. Industry recognition of the course/diploma ?
    4. Credibility after completion of the course ?
    5. Is the value of the course justified with the fee of 5.8 lacs for a distance learning prog ?
    6. Are there any chances/opportunity of getting campus placement/recommendation ?
    7. Is there any bank offering loan for pursuing the such education program ?

There are people outside talking both positive/Negative about the course but I felt its best to hear it out from the horses mouth.
Hope you will spare 10 min from your busy schedule and advise me, just as you would have advised your younger brother, what’s best for my career in this competitive world.

    My Kind Regards,
    Ankit Fogla

    1. 1. What is credibility of the course viz-a-viz a full time E-MBA offered by the IIM’s ?
[VINAY] Full Time EMBA for definitely better that doing from Video Conferencing Mode – Three reasons (a) They offer you placements and (b) You have more interaction with faculty and you yourself are more focussed and (c) More networking with your batch mate. Here networking with peer is limited to people who are attending the course in your center. You meet with rest of the people but level of interaction is less.
      2. Is the diploma equivalent to the one we receive on undergoing a mba prog ?
[VINAY] Yes you are right but then it is not recognized by Govt Of India as of now. In future it may be likely.
      3. Industry recognition of the course/diploma ?
[VINAY] Consider it part of learning and learnings don’t go waste. Again recognition would bot be similar to a PGO course but you could better relate to the course now that had you done it right after your college/
      4. Credibility after completion of the course ?
[VINAY] Same as above. It adds value to resume but then how to sell and how to market it to recruiters you would have to manage it entirely
      5. Is the value of the course justified with the fee of 5.8 lacs for a distance learning prog ?
[VINAY] I guess it is justified looking at effort IIMK is putting. Other EPGP courses are costing 20 lakhs approx
      6. Are there any chances/opportunity of getting campus placement/recommendation ?
[VINAY] As of now no. Though EPGP-02/03 batch are trying to form a placement cell but then it is in a very nascent stage and effort has not gone any far.
      7. Is there any bank offering loan for pursuing the such education program ?
[VINAY] There is a local Calicut bank(SBI I suppose) which does offer you a loan and they would set up a stall at IIMK as well but then I doubt anyone would have availed it. During in campus IIMK would arrange for a Bank from where you could get loan. But then many of the candidates are either self sponsored (as myself) and/or are sponsored by their company.

  2. Hi Vinay,

I am selected for ePGP04 program. I am sure I won’t be able to attend some classes in a row due to unavoidable situations. I wanted to know how critical it would be if I miss classes in a row. (say 3 to 4 classes). Please send across you thoughts and comment on this

    Thanks
    Anoop A

    1. Anoop,
That should be fine…. .Normally first class is just an introductory class and gives a student an overview. Towards the last few classes it picks up the pace. Also you can request your center to keep the class video streaming with them. Once you come back you can view them. Before viewing a class normally you have to give your class 24-48 hrs before you want to hear them .. So essentially you would not lose any classes. However may lose 1-2 quiz but then most of the prof takes best 2 out of 3 or best 2 out of 4 etc

      Regards
      Vinay

  3. Hi Vinay,

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
In case if we get trasfer, will be able to transfer the satellitle centre ?
What is the scope of the certificate value if someone need to do Phd after this ?

    Thanks
    Vincent

    1. Yes you can transfer the center to the place where you move. But please check if the the pace has Hughes center (you can get the list from Hughes). This years onwards they have introduced some fees for the transfer from one center to another. How ever attending one off session from some other center is fine.

IIMK professor did mention that they would give weight-age and/or consider these courses as part of FPM program and one can be exempted from doing all the basic courses which FPM requires. However this situation hasn’t yet come and therefore they were not sure about few things like did FPM student has to attend same courses as some other person who hasn’t gone through the course. So I would say its too early now … Surely you would get some weightage but then PHD selection differs from IIM to IIM.. However you surely would get some advantage and in few of the cases one has to give qualifying examination so as to ascertain that candidate has gone through Year 1 of FPM program

  4. Sir,
When any organization comes up with advertisements or vacancies for recruitments/promotions, and when the minimum education qualification demands Post Graduation or MBA or Masters Degree or Management Degree/Diploma, PG in certain specific specialization, etc, would we be eligible for the same having passed this EPGP course?
Especially Public Sector Undertakings, which are very strict about your education qualifications.

What are the experiences of the previous batches? Were most of them able to grow in their careers? Were they able to expand their job-opportunities? What difference has it made in their pay-packages?

Obviously we cannot compare it with the Full-Time Courses, but at least there should be some statistical data giving information about job/salary/overall growth in responsibilities, etc; giving some general idea about the incremental we could expect after investing this much amount of hard-earned money/time and efforts into it.

    1. Raju,
Reiterating once again that as of now EPGP from IIMK is not same as MBA specially looking at any Govt jobs. However private companies treat it as MBA. Also it is up to an individual to encash brand value of IIMK. Since no placements are there one cannot say increase in benchmark salaries. What I have seen is that people do look for alternate option elsewhere after doing this course and look for at least higher position and/or 25 % increase for sure

      Regards
      Vinay

  5. Dear Mr.Bhutani,
Thanks for the effort you have put forward to bring the characteristic of IIM-K EPGP. Any idea what is the value of the course in comparison with IIM-B PGSEM(Now called as PGPEM), 2.5 years part time diploma, in IT Industry?
I have seen in many blogs and checked with employes that treat it as equivalent as IIM-A IMPX, IIM-C PGX or IIM-B EPGP( 1 year full time all three)?
There is a huge cost and time associated with the same. So, naturally expectation from student would be same/similar as in other course. While at the same time, comparison is not done with PGP full time, but ultimately knowledge itself will help if the opportunity is given to the passed out students in terms of getting new roles. e,g moving from Typical Technical Architect Role or Project Management role to Marketing Management Role in the same industry?
Ultimately everything should be honored by industry. But, is there any branding done for the course, as it happened with other diploma courses of IIM? Is there enough awareness amongst HR of IT industry about the course?

Also wanted to check, how elaborate it is in terms of Global Exchange Programme? Is there any such provision in the course?

    1. Partha,
If you ask me if a course is not providing placements for students all the courses can be compared at a same level. It is the break which you get is what makes a difference. Also I have even seen people doing 1 year full time EPGP from IIMB but they couldn’t get up the ladder because of lots of other external circumstances – job market, own past experience, own personality, perfect job etc etc. Don’t expect that course from these IIMs would make u radiate with an aura…

Regarding global exchange there is none. Also after doing EPGP it is not fair to expect role change.. No one would offer a 10 years experience in IT a role in into finance but would rather take a fresher from market and then train him/her. Indian market is very unforgiving in the sense that your past karmas are reflected in what you would get in future with delta increse

  6. Hello Mr Vinay

It’s been a long time that you wrote this article. I am going to repeat the same question as the first one.

    1. Now any campus placements are introduced for EPGP students or not.

  7. Dear Mr. Vinay,

    Greetings !!

I have been selected for EPGP-10 and the batch is going to be stared in December-2017. As you have mentioned in your article that this course is to grab more knowledge, case studies and deep understanding of different sectors. Here my query is as every one wants to get an IIM Tag and expecting a higher growth in monetary terms with ref to his learning, so what is average outcome of this course? Where can I imagine myself after two years?

Also, as per IIMK website, we will be getting the membership for AMBA. How advantageous is it for us?

Hope to see your earliest response.

    Regards
    Aman Jain

    1. I guess I replied this in my other areas in this site somewhere. Growth will depend on various circumstances-
      A) your past background
      B) your current role in organisation.
      C) your ability to connect with folks and use influence.

Since there is no placement means you have to be in market to look out for new job and/or within organisations. Plus this course is not a specialisation into areas like Robotics process automation or AI..but more of a general management. This course would help you to connect with other 200 colleagues, will make your thinking process on and surely would help you clear interviews with your all round experience and course pedagogy. In monetary terms you would have to figure out ways and means for the same.

    2. AMBA doesn’t really help unless you want to go for PHD/FPM/doctorate in US universities.. Even Indian universities who are AMBA do not consider each other courses.. So to me it ain’t any value than adding some stars to institute as selling proposition..

  8. Sir, Could you please tell the dates/month on which each quarter of EPGP course will start. In the website they have not mentioned any dates.

    1. I wouldn’t be able to tell you that as this site is not by IIMK but by self interest .. I suggest you talk to EPGP department in IIMK to the same or send them email. They are quite responsive in that sense

  9. Hi Vinay,

Thank you for creating such a wonderful insight of iim k epgp.
How one can fund MBA fee, iim k has any such tie up with bank for loan.

  10. Hello Sir,
I have been offered an Admit to the IIMA’s ePGP program. But I have doubts and have been thinking if going for IIM K’s EPGP is more value for money. The IIM A program costs around 20 Lakhs and offers a degree of “Master of Management Studies eLearning Mode” , while I believe currently IIMK offers a MBA degree for 12 Lakhs . My main concern is the degree nomenclature being offered by IIMA and if it will be acceptable by the industry. Does brand value of IIMA will provide more value vs IIMKs

    1. Prasanth, You should look for program, course content and not whether degree nomenclature / acceptance by Industry. This would matter if u plan to go for FPM program. And the biggest challenge is that if you have done EPGP from IIMK, IIM Bangalore will not accept your EPGP and you would have to give RAT/CAT/GMAT as qualifying exam for FPM. The meat of doing PGP (MBA) is the placement which it offers and the salary thereof. Executive MBAs don’t have placements (not sure if it is started for EPGP course for IIMK) . Few questions you should ask yourself – a) Why are you wanting to do this course – Is it ROI, enhancing knowledge, job change, track change and (b) What return I am looking in terms of – Is it salary, position etc and then compare and contrast things.

If you have money and patience and experience within 3 – 5 years I would suggest to go for full time MBA than a part time one. Else you have no other options…After 10 + years in industry it becomes difficult to change career track as it is difficult to get a break. And even if you are lucky you will get job as a fresher. So take a call accordingly.

There are some decent professors in IIMK and I am sure there would be same in IIMA as well but then there are mediocre prof. and some poor (skill fully poor I meant) prof as well… If you are looking at learning that all IIMs covers lots of case studies as a part of their curriculum from Harvard Press.

  11. Thank You Sir Appreciate your thoughtful response

I have actually 11 years exp in IT services industry . My aspiration is to grow as senior architect , technical manager .I have seen senior architects a tech managers and CTOs do have business degree. So that was my one of the reasons of pursuing MBA that it will be an asset when vying for such roles in the current org. So the idea was to pursue an MBA with focus on Information Systems .

I have compared the electives and main subjects curriculum from both univs , both look same.
I don’t know if I will get to IIMK , but at 12 lakh and easy payment structure doesn’t seem like bad buy.
It gives MBA degree .AMBA implies this will be valued abroad. The learning center is close by so don’t have to spend time in Bangalore traffic. 12 year old program means good alumni network. So all of this makes me lean towards IIMK .

Call it peer pressure or what ever People are like ” Are you mad! leaving IIMA for IIMK that would be first in history”

Now with IIMA program which costs about 20 Lakhs I have to think ROI. I work with a big 100 year old Tech mnc but one of poorest pay masters and am sure post this degree my package wont see much change neither my role. Thus i would have to switch. Now my major concern begins here I can’t call my self an MBA , since the degree I receive would be MMS eLearning Mode.
Will the industry accept it just because it is from IIMA or will it reject it since it is not an MBA is a question which plaques my mind. How much would the brand value of particular IIM play a role after all its our skill and how we apply the learned knowledge that matters.

It feels like winning a Road-roller or a JCB in a lottery, you won something of great value but that’s all there is to it.

  12. Hi Sir,

It was so kind of you for providing insights about IIMK EPGP Program.

I am having 9 Years of Experience in Software Testing IT Domain for US Top Bank.
But issue is that I am not getting much salary and also the Job which I am doing is monotonous and has no value.

Could you please answer below questions based on your experience after doing this course.

    1. I am getting very less pay in my current firm. So will this course help out in getting me Job if I start applying with this degree outside?
    2. If not Can I show case this degree and get into Data Analytics domain within my firm where they ask for post graduation degree in the roles and requirements section?
    3. Is it worth spending 12 Lakhs for this course with hope of getting better hikes/packages? (As I am already going through financial burden)
    4. The degree offered through EPGP IIMK is it considered as Full Time MBA?
    5. Do IT Companies value such degrees and offer me the roles suitable for MBA graduates in IT domain?

Please do answer these question as it can guide me to take decision. Apologies if you have already answered any of the questions asked above
    Thank you in advance.

    1. Varun,
You have asked lots of queries. Let me take a shot at it and answer it based on my knowledge and experience –

      1. I am getting very less pay in my current firm. So will this course help me to get Job if I start applying with this degree outside?
[VINAY] Software Testing area is a commodity and salaries are indeed less unless you start to Test Architect role and/or Product Owner role. Automation Engineer -Selenium/API/Security/Penetration you get decent salary to start with but after 10-12 years of experience salaries get stagnated. I suggest you to transition to PO and/or Test Architect domain
      2. If not Can I show case this degree and get into cross IT domains such as Supply Chain Management or Data Analytics etc within my firm where they ask for post graduation degree in the roles and requirements section?
[VINAY] Making a switch in the career isn’t easy unless you want to start as a fresher. I suggest hold on to a particular domain and you can become domain specialist – Insurance/Banking/HealthCare and then switch to PO role who with technology and define future of the industry.
So I suggest don’t make a change in domain unless you are confident of yourself and financial backing
      3. Is it worth spending 12 Lakhs for this course with hope of getting better hikes/packages? (As I am already going through financial burden)
[VINAY] If sole purpose is for Salary increase and/or jumping the career bandwagon then I wouldn’t encourage you to pursue this path. This EPGP will help you to transition to domain specialist/PO role for sure but then you need to choose and select organization/accounts/projects who are in such domain
      4. The degree offered through EPGP IIMK is it considered as Full Time MBA or part time MBA?
[VINAY] Again there isn;t much clarity but given the automonies given to IIM it is equivalent to MBA but then a lot depends on how industry perceives it. Industry gives weight-age to full time PGDM than part time.
      5. Do IT Companies value such degrees and offer me the roles suitable for MBA graduates in IT domain?
[VINAY] IT companies are more concerned to IT projects… and you still would be working in Tech domain and/or Testing Domain but then it helps in understanding and knowing the nuances of managerial/leadership traits which are helpful to go to next levels.
      6. Lastly will this degree help me to get into Teaching Profession or pursue futher PhD going forward in future?
[VINAY] IIMK EPGP candidates doesn’t have to appear for GMAT/CAT/RAT for applying to IIMK FPM program however if you wish to apply for IIMB FPM program you would have to have CAT/GMAT/RAT score. So in short there isn’t much clarity and ambiguity exists at how each IIM treats other IIM candidates. Similarly never ever Masters is a mandatory criteria for PHD/FPM. It is always BE/BTech/MBBS an entry criteria for FPM/PhD. PHD is an involved event in life and takes 5-6 years on an average for someone to complete PHD from IIMs .. If you have such plans why do EPGP and waste 2 years.

So in short a lot depends on your overall persona, capability, education background and your ability to take risk in life to achieve something higher. Degrees and studies are only a cut off criteria and never a selection criteria for job/opportunity. An IIT guy clears interview not because he is from IIT but he performs smartly in interview he clears the same and same goes for an MBA/PGP from IIM. If you are still in doubt call me on my cell – 96119-25216 and we can talk
